When most people think of breast augmentation, they think of one method in particular: breast implants. What some don’t realize, however, is that there is an alternative to breast implants. This technique, which takes a different approach toward breast enlargement, is known as fat transfer breast augmentation.
Augmentation with Breast Implants
Augmentation with breast implants is a single-step procedure. Your surgeon uses a small incision either in your armpit, around your areola or under the fold of the breast to insert an implant into the breast pocket. Breast implants can create a subtle increase in volume or a dramatic boost to your bust line, depending on your goals and preferences.*
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
Unlike breast enlargement that uses saline or silicone implants, breast augmentation with fat transfer is a two-step process. First, your plastic surgeon uses liposuction to remove fat cells from a donor area, usually the hips or tummy. Next, the surgeon injects the fat cells into your breasts to add volume.
Fat transfer is best for a subtle increase in breast volume, because not all fat cells will survive transfer to a new part of the body.* Most women can expect to gain between one-half and a full cup size after fat transfer breast augmentation, although individual results vary.* However, those who are interested in a more noticeable boost can undergo more than one fat transfer procedure spaced several months apart.*
