When to Consider Breast Surgery Revision
There are many reasons to consider a breast revision surgery or “redo” procedure. Dr. Campanile will take the time to review your case individually. Revision of a prior breast surgery requires careful consideration and a thorough understanding of your anatomy in order to develop a surgical plan that can address existing cosmetic concerns.
Some of the most common reasons why patients seek breast revision surgery with Dr. Campanile include capsular contracture, implant deflation or rupture, asymmetry, poorly positioned implants from another surgeon and changes in appearance or preferences over time.
Capsular Contracture
One of the most common situations that leads to revision of an initial breast augmentation is capsular contracture, which is the formation of scar tissue that constricts the breast implant. Capsular contracture can create an unflattering appearance and may even feel uncomfortable or painful. Dr. Campanile is experienced in addressing this concern and is able to carefully remove or release the scar tissue, often replacing the implant and adjusting the pocket to help prevent recurrence.
Implant Deflation or Rupture
While breast implants are designed to be durable, they are not lifetime devices. Ruptured saline implants will cause an obvious change in breast size and shape within hours or days, while silicone implant ruptures are typically more subtle and only detectable through imaging. In either case, Dr. Campanile can replace the damaged implant to restore your original results or even allow you to make other desired changes to the type or size of your implants at the same time.
Breast Asymmetry
Breasts naturally have some degree of asymmetry, but noticeable unevenness in size, shape or position after augmentation can make results less satisfying. Asymmetry may occur immediately after surgery due to implant placement or can develop over time due to changes in the tissue or implants. During breast revision surgery, Dr. Campanile can address these underlying concerns and restore balance and symmetry to your finished look.
Poorly Positioned Implants
Implants that sit too high, too low, too far apart or too close together can detract from your desired look and can sometimes cause discomfort. Poor positioning may be due to the initial surgical technique used, healing patterns or changes over time. Dr. Campanile can use specialized revision techniques to adjust the implant pocket and reposition the implant for a more natural-looking and balanced result.
Changes in Breast Appearance Over Time
Even with excellent initial results, the appearance of your breasts can change over time due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight fluctuations or the natural aging process. Due to changes in skin and tissue elasticity and, in some cases, implants that have shifted over time, you may notice changes in breast shape or position. Revision surgery can reverse these changes and get your results back on track.
Changes in Aesthetic Preferences
Your ideal breast size, shape and overall appearance today might not be the same as when you had your first breast augmentation. You may wish to go larger or smaller, switch from saline to silicone or choose a different implant profile. Breast revision surgery provides an opportunity to tailor your results to your current goals and stage of life.
Ideal Candidates for Breast Revision
If you’ve undergone a breast enhancement procedure, whether a breast lift, breast augmentation or breast reduction, and are unhappy with the results, you may be a good candidate for a breast surgery revision from Dr. Campanile. Although you should maintain realistic expectations about the results, breast surgery revision can help you get much closer to the end result that you’d initially envisioned.
In addition to going into the procedure with realistic expectations, ideal candidates for breast revision should:
- Be in good physical and mental health.
- Not smoke, or be willing to quit.
- Be at a healthy, stable weight.
- Be fully healed from their previous breast surgery.
During your breast revision consultation, Dr. Campanile will carefully review your medical history and the details of your previous procedure, as well as perform a physical exam to ensure you are a good candidate for revision surgery.

Preparing for Breast Revision Surgery
Taking some time to prepare for your upcoming procedure in advance can help to ensure a smooth, stress-free process. Dr. Campanile and his team at Campanile Plastic Surgery in Denver will help you understand what to expect at every step along the way, from your initial consultation through recovery, so you can feel confident and well-informed from the start.

At Your Consultation
Your breast implant revision consultation with Dr. Campanile is your opportunity to discuss your concerns, goals and options in detail. During this visit, you’ll review your medical history, past surgical records and any symptoms you may be experiencing, such as discomfort or visible changes in your implants.
Dr. Campanile will perform a physical exam to evaluate your breast tissue, skin quality, implant position and any specific concerns or symptoms you may have. He will explain your breast revision options and recommended surgical techniques and help you decide if this procedure is the right fit for you.

Preparation Tips
In the weeks leading up to your breast revision, we recommend taking preparation steps like:
- Requesting ample time off work to rest and recover.
- Pre-pay bills, take care of chores early and reschedule appointments to promote stress-free healing.
- Plan ahead for meals and get grocery shopping done in advance.
- Inform Dr. Campanile if you’re a smoker, and quit at least two weeks prior to your scheduled surgery. You should also refrain from smoking during your recovery.
- Let Dr. Campanile know if you’re taking any prescriptions or supplements, as these may need to be adjusted prior to surgery.

On Surgery Day
Do not eat or drink anything starting at midnight the night before your procedure, unless Dr. Campanile instructs you otherwise. The morning before you arrive for your breast revision surgery:
- Take a shower using antimicrobial soap.
- Do not apply lotions, perfume, skin care or makeup.
- Remove jewelry.
- Wear a button-up shirt, comfortable pants and slip-on shoes.
Your Breast Revision Procedure
Because each revision breast surgery case is unique, Dr. Campanile may use one of several techniques at his surgical facilities in Denver. Breast surgery revision methods may involve removal of scar tissue around an implant (known as capsular contracture), replacement of an implant, revision of scars, correction of asymmetry or a number of other techniques to improve breast appearance.
The primary goal is to choose the strategy that is right for every individual woman, and all surgical techniques will be customized accordingly. Dr. Campanile can give you the best information about your surgery and the recovery process during your consultation.
Breast Revision Recovery
Recovery should be very similar to what you experienced after your initial surgery, although many women find that it is somewhat shorter. For the most part, you should be able to resume your normal routine in about a week, although exercise and other vigorous activities will need to wait until you’re more fully healed.
Feeling tired and sore the first few days is perfectly normal. Although many patients feel discouraged by this, the best thing to do is just rest and give your body the time and space it needs to heal.
- Expect your breasts to feel tender and look swollen at first.
- You may have to wear a special compression bra to aid healing.
- A normal daily routine can often be resumed within several days.
- Vigorous activities will have to stay on hold until Dr. Campanile gives the all-clear.
Although you may be tempted to push yourself, recovery is the time for taking it easy and giving your body plenty of down time. If you have any questions about preparing for your breast surgery revision, please do not hesitate to contact us online or call us at 720-336-4591.
Your Breast Revision Results
While some changes will be visible immediately after your breast revision surgery, it’s important to remember that your final results will take time to fully develop. Right after surgery, you can expect some swelling, bruising and mild discomfort, which can temporarily affect the appearance of your breasts.
Most swelling begins to subside within the first few weeks, and you’ll start to see your results taking shape during this time. However, it can take around 3 to 6 months for your breast implants to fully settle into their new position and for scars to begin fading. Scars should continue to fade and gradually improve over the next 12 to 18 months, often becoming softer and less visible.
Once healing is complete, most women enjoy long-lasting improvements that restore confidence and comfort.

Breast Revision FAQs
How much does breast revision surgery cost in Denver?
The exact cost of your Denver breast revision surgery will depend on the extent of the changes required, whether or not you will be reusing existing implants or replacing them and other details unique to your procedure. Because of this, the best way to get an accurate breast revision cost estimate is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Campanile to discuss your goals. We are also pleased to offer cosmetic surgery financing options.
Will insurance pay for a breast surgery revision?
Most insurance plans do not cover breast implant revision surgery, since it is typically considered a cosmetic procedure. However, if all or part of your procedure is deemed medically necessary, insurance may pay for some of the cost. Call the number listed on the back of your insurance card for more information about your coverage.
How soon can I have a revision procedure?
You will need to wait until you’ve fully healed from your initial breast enhancement procedure before moving forward with revision surgery. This is typically within 6 to 12 months of your first breast surgery.
How painful is breast revision surgery?
Most women find that breast revision surgery recovery is less painful and shorter than that of their original breast augmentation. However, your recovery experience will depend on the extent of revisions needed.
Should I change my implant type or size during revision?
This is a personal decision that you can discuss with Dr. Campanile during your consultation to help you decide.
How will a breast revision affect my scars?
Dr. Campanile will make every effort to work with the existing incisions in order to minimize scarring. Much like your initial surgery, the secondary incisions will fade over time. If excessive scarring is one of the reasons for your breast surgery revision, there are methods that can be used to facilitate the healing process and reduce the appearance of existing scars.
What are the risks involved in having breast revision surgery?
There are always risks with any surgery. However, the risks for breast surgery revision are usually not any higher than for your initial enhancement surgery.
How long will my results last?
Breast revision results can last many years, but factors like aging, weight changes and future pregnancies can affect their longevity. That said, with proper care, many patients enjoy their results for a decade or longer before considering further changes.
